Net Zero Water Planning

Net zero water is the concept of creating water-neutral infrastructure. In terms of a net zero water building, the total water consumption of the building is fully offset by the use of non-potable, alternative water sources and/or water returned to the original water source.

In 2014, Fort Collins Utilities and the Brendle Group formed the Colorado Water Innovation Cluster with the vision of making Colorado the center for leadership in "net zero" water planning and sustainability, providing visibility for the state and showcasing the capabilities of the Colorado Water Innovation Cluster. They succeeded in building the below net zero water planning template.

The planning template helps users:

    • Determine a company or organization’s baseline and forecasted water footprint based on existing and future activities
    • Identify strategies to reduce water consumption and impacts on water quality
    • Analyze strategies and aggregating into scenarios for water planning
    • Set milestones on the path to neutrality based on scenario modeling
    • Measure and monitor progress during implementation
